Shalimar

A little over 20 years ago I talked or made my old friend and old roommate into taking this kitten back to Fresno with him .  She was so shy..he gave her such a good life.. another testimonial that one shy kitten can give back so much given a chance.

We lost our little kitty this morning.  She lived a very long, happy life. She was a litle over 20 years old, which I understand is approximately 97 in human years. You wouldn’t know she was 97 by how playful she was.

I will miss her waiting in the hallway every morning, telling me to change her food dish, and her litter box. Diane will miss seeing her in the front window, and following her throughout the house.

She was the runt of the litter, but she was the most dedicated cat you could possibly have.

We will miss her.

A “Star” is Born

A “Star” is Born

I was born to a loving mother and spent my earliest moments in a pile of kittens all snug and warm.  I can still remember how safe I felt during those first weeks.

Then one day, and I still don’t know why, someone loaded me up in a car and dropped me off at the animal shelter.  I was terrified.  The next thing I knew, I was put in a cage with another cat I’d never seen before.  It smelled funny.  I could hear other cats calling out, dogs barking, people talking, and I just wanted to know when my mommy was going to come and get me.  Clearly some awful mistake had been made, as I’d only been in the world for one month and before I’d even experienced life, I was already in jail.

Max SLO

This letter comes from Philip Browning and his family who adopted Max SLO in 2009.

I know I am a bit late, but I thought I would send a thank you and update to those who tried and in the end helped us get our rescued Bouvier/Newfie mix MAX.

Max

Max rules everyone in the family except my wife and myself. He lets the kids walk him and does what they want unless he thinks there is something more important or that they are wrong! He then herds them or drags them where he wants them to go. He is protective of everyone. Even his little pal Rusty. Rusty is a puppy we found on our front porch several months ago. Max alerted us to him and has been his big brother ever since. Rusty was scared of Max for weeks. He is a miniature wirehaired dachshund and some thing else mixed about 10 months old, at least according the vet. Rusty weighs in at 12-13 pounds and is nine inches at the shoulder. Max is still just well over 100 lbs!

Max has really livened up since Rusty came. Their playtime is our own version of pro wrestling. Rusty is like a child trying to lift an adult’s arm pushing on Max’s legs while Max lays down apparently resting. Rusty will finally lift and move the leg only to have Max put it back. They nip and slap until Max tires of it and puts both paws on top of Rusty pinning him to the floor. On occasion Rusty’s head will completely disappear into Max’s mouth. Max decides when play time is over. There is a look or sound and Rusty stops.

Shelter Overload

Watch this piece about animal shelter overcrowding, read the accompanying article here, then read an update from Sweet’s owner below.

From Sweet’s owner…

We have a hook-up from our computer to our t.v. so we played the video on our t.v. yesterday and Sweet was sleeping on my lap….when Ellen’s voice came on the t.v. Sweet’s head shot up in the air, she looked around and then when Ellen was done talking she sighed and put her head back down.  You can think what you want but we think she definitely knows that voice!

Fundraising Event a Huge Success

Our Pouring Wine for Canines and Felines fundraiser was a great success. Lots of $$$ made and 8 cats adopted..so thanks to all: Rons Nursery, The Quarterdeck, the wineries and all of the people that donated silent auction items and joined the raffle. And a big thank you to the community for coming out and supporting the event. This was the biggest event yet. Approximately 450 people helped support their local shelters. Love you all.

Rhonda

(Below are some of the great comments I received.)

From Terry:

Rhonda, you are such a dedicated hard worker! I had to work last night, but for the last week I told a bunch of people to go to this event, so I hope some did and made it better for the cause! You have a heart of gold :-)

From Keely:

Great event! Congrats on the $$ raised and finding some cute kitties homes! I would have taken one, but my doggies would not have been happy! ;-)

From Greg:

Wow! What a great event tonight Rhonda. Congratulations on the great turnout.

From Debby (Feline Network):

YOU ARE INCREDIBLE! We’re all still sort of reeling (happily, of course) over what you were able to put together and that we were one of the beneficiary organizations of your amazing fundraiser. Feline Network has gone round and round for years about our need for some organized fund raising events, but it always comes back to the fact that all our volunteers are spending their time dealing with the cats and kittens in one way or another and we’ve never had anyone with the experience and the drive to put something together. So out of the blue you offer to include us in this benefit and about all we have to do is show up. And when we did, we found out what a truly wonderful event you’d put together. I can’t imagine all the work that went into it — lining up the donations of food, wine, raffle and auction prizes. And we were totally blown away by the attendance. People were lined up at 5:00pm to go in and there was almost no break in the line until close to 7:00 (I can speak directly to that as I was one of those manning the “admission table”).
